A little bit about Live Recording

Rod Elliott's Low Noise Balanced Microphone Pre-amplifier

Two years ago, my eldest daughter was growing up and soon to leave High School. She was playing in the Pimlico Chamber String Orchestra, a quite polished school ensemble, and the microphone on my video camera was not capturing their "beautiful" sound. (Well, I thought it was beautiful.)   Harnessing the "power of the internet", I discovered Rod Elliott's site where there was a nice circuit for a low noise microphone pre-amp which WORKED on my first effort. I was quite thrilled by the fact that it worked and the excellent sound it produced.

This little amplifier produced good sound, nice and quiet with good presence, but unfortunately my Sony Handycam has auto-gain, which means that with low source sound levels or low ambient sound levels, the recording level is raised to a factory-determined level ... so background noise or electronic noise in quiet passaqges is amplified to the level of gushing waterfalls; and forte passages are limited to a "normal" sound level. All dynamics are lost and the recordings are nearly useless from the Handycam. I believe that this was a problem with the Handycam itself, because when using the little amplifier with my hifi sound system, there is no such problem.
I now record sound direct onto my laptop with an external Tascam US-122 soundcard. I have been very happy with this arrangement ... nice and affordable, and a satisfying sound. The US-122 comes with Cubase LE or some other cut-down Cubase WITH a manual. This is a high powered program which does everything I need.
